Hash Dictionary
Hare – the person setting
the trail
Pack – those following
trail
Live hare – when the hare
goes out a few minutes before the rest of the pack, laying trail as he goes, so
that the pack is actually chasing the hare
Dead hare – when the hare
pre-lays the trail, often then following along with the rest of the pack
Fat boy – a short,
walking hash
X = check – when you see
this mark, the trail can go in any direction
“dot”
– what you are looking for to mark the trail
F = false – when you see
this, you’ve been f***ed. Go back to the last check and find the true
trail
BN = beer near – every
hashers favorite trail mark. Beer check
is ahead
BC# = back check – go
back the number of marks indicated. The
last mark now becomes a check. This is
rarely seen, as it tends to be as confusing to the hare as it is to the rest of
the pack
à = arrow – shows direction on trail (duh). Arrows never lie (but hares do…)
“on-one” – what you say
when you see one mark
“on-two” – what you see
when you see 2 marks
“on-on”
– what you say after the 3rd mark to let the rest of the pack know
you are on trail
“are
you?” – way of asking a wandering hasher if he or she
is in fact on trail.
“checking”
or “looking” – answer to above question if you don’t know whether or not you
are on trail
“lost”
– answer to above question if you don’t know where the hell trail is
shiggy –
thorns, swamps, mud, obstructing branches…anything non-hashers might consider
poor running conditions
FRB – front running
bastards. Those with more speed than wit
who often run lots of extra miles down false trails, letting the slower, wiser
folks know the more direct route
DFL – dead fucking
last. What you don’t want to be at the
beer check
virgin – someone at their first hash
circle – hashers circle up before a hash to introduce
themselves and listen to the hares go over the details of the hash, and after the hash for ceremonies. Respect the circle!
ceremonies – the time after the hash where songs are
sung, namings
take place, accusations are made and down-downs are taken
accusations – a time to point out the infractions of other
hasher on trail. These are punishable by
down-downs. Beware, as false accusations are also punishable by down-downs
down-down – the downing of a glass of beer, after which the
glass is emptied over your head to show that it is in fact “downed”
hash name – after several hashes and/or when you do
something particularly stupid, you will be given a hash name, by which you will
forever be known in the world of hashing…until such time as the hash decides to
change it
on-after – the “after-hash”, usually at a bar,
usually involving pitchers of beer and food
hash cash – money contributed at the end of the
on-after. This goes mainly to pay for
the beer and food at the bar, but occasionally may supplement the hare’s
expenses (but don’t count on this) and the general hash fund. This is usually $10-15, occasionally as much
as $20 (but not often).
